Chief Financial Officer

The Organization:
WARF is an 84 year-old, entrepreneurial, tax-exempt, supporting organization of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Morgridge Institute for Research, a medical research organization. WARF has 70 employees. The organization provides patent and licensing services to its supported organizations and manages an endowment in excess of a billion dollars. WARF licenses university technology globally and to faculty start-up companies. WARF makes annual grants to its supported organizations. It also provides back office support (legal, financial, accounting, HR and communications) to the Morgridge Institute for Research and two other affiliated organizations, WiSys Technology Foundation and WiCell Research Institute.

WARF is the developer, on behalf of the University, private donors and WARF, of a 150 million dollar research institute. The facility will house two medical research institutes, with one of them being the Morgridge Institute for Research. The facility will also have a large public area that includes food service and meeting space. Upon completion of the project, WARF will function as the facilities manager.

The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Managing Director of WARF and partnering with all members of the executive management team including the Director of Investments, General Counsel, Director of Licensing and the executive directors of its affiliates, the CFO/COO will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategy for WARF and its affiliates. As a member of the executive management team, the CFO/COO is advisor to the department managers, assisting them with their financial and operational plans and economic modeling. S/he will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization, in conjunction with the managing director and the executive directors of its affiliates, the boards of trustees and the audit committees of the boards.

Candidate Requirements:
The CFO/COO will be a leader with at least 10 years of broad financial/operations including experience gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. S/he will have experience managing the finance and other operational functions within a diverse, department-based entity.

The CFO will have the following experience and attributes:
  • A minimum of a BS; MBA preferred; a CPA would be a plus.
  • At least 10 years of broad successful operations experience, including managing the finance, and information technology functions.
  • Experience with government grants and contracts and tax-exempt bonding is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of information technology and other operational systems and the necessity of such systems for the organization is preferred.
